Adewale Mayowa, a self-taught Nigerian artist, has carved a unique path from the structured corridors of medical school to the boundless realms of visual art, establishing himself as a notable figure in contemporary African surrealism.

Born in Nigeria, Mayowa embarked on the conventional route of pursuing a medical degree. However, as he neared the completion of his studies, he found himself at a crossroads, questioning the trajectory of a medical career and yearning for a more fulfilling pursuit. This introspection led him to explore various creative outlets, including modeling, dance, acting, poetry, photography, and digital painting. Through this extensive exploration, Mayowa discovered a profound connection to visual art, particularly drawing. Despite initial challenges—his early attempts at drawing were, in his words, “wack”—he was inspired by a fellow artist’s progression from novice to professional. This realization fueled his commitment to practice and improvement.
